How to Wash Leather Handbag Safely

Can I wash leather handbags in a washing machine?

Yes you can, but well, expensive leather should only be wiped and cleaned if you want it to last and not to depreciate in value. On the other hand, if you have any leather bag that has seen better days, throwing the old, inexpensive leather handbag in the washing machine can be the easiest way to clean.

Wash leather handbags in 6 easy steps:

  1. Test the soap you will be using on a hidden part of your bag to ensure it won’t stain or affect the surface of your bag in any way.
  2. Pour a small amount of castile soap into your detergent dispenser.
  3. Drop in your leather handbag. If possible, turn your handbag inside out to protect the leather material.
  4. Set your washing machine to cold wash and gentle cycle. Don't let your leather bag dry in the washing machine.
  5. Reshape your leather handbag to its original shape. Air it out without hanging it and exposing it to direct sunlight.
  6. Apply leather conditioner if available. The leather conditioner protects and cares for your leather so it lasts longer and is more resistant to dirt and stains.

How to wash a leather handbag?

Leather handbags are generally water-resistant and not waterproof which means water can definitely cause damage and speed up wear for your treasured bags. Especially for expensive bags, we recommend a no water cleaning process:

  • Remove all items and wipe off your bag of dirt and grime
  • Make a soapy solution from distilled water and a little bit of castile soap
  • Test the cleaning solution on a hidden part of your leather bag to ensure it doesn't stain or ruin it
  • Get a microfiber cloth or dishcloth. Dip it in soapy water and wipe your leather handbag.
  • Wipe it dry with another cloth and let it air dry but don't expose it to direct sunlight.
  • Treat it with a leather conditioner.

How to clean your leather handbag without water

Use a dry cloth to remove dirt and dust from your leather handbag
So first thing first, get a dry cloth and wipe off dirt, dust and stains from the outside, going to the inside of your leather handbag. It’s good to do it every day to maintain its cleanliness and to ensure your bag is dry.

Apply leather cleaner
Apply leather cleaner Use a clean cloth and apply the leather cleaner in a circular motion. Make sure to clean your leather purse entirely and use the specially formulated leather cleaner to avoid any changes that may cause your purse to get broken. Lastly, use a damp cloth to remove the excess cleaner on your leather.

Apply conditioner
After cleaning the leather make sure to condition it especially if it's a high-quality leather material. Apply a leather conditioner on a soft cloth and gently rub it on the surface of the leather bag after washing. Use a soft and dry cloth to gently polish the leather surface. Without proper conditioning, your leather handbag will dry out and get worn out earlier.
